During the Second World War the port of Brightlingsea once again became HMS Nemo and carried out coastal support duties with its numerous small craft.

During this time the Navy and Brightlingsea shipyards experimented with and developed the “Double L” minesweeping equipment which was effective against magnetic mines and is still used today.

After Brightlingsea RNA’s affiliation with HMS Illustrious ceased when she was decommissioned, it was thought appropriate that we should seek affiliation to an MCMW vessel, and after approaching the head of the relevant department we were affiliated to HMS Brocklesby. Branch members have taken opportunities to visit her when in the UK. She is now in home waters and we are hoping to meet some of the crew and maybe make a visit.
